Charles E. Swinford Jr.

Charles E. Swinford, Jr., 90, died Saturday, August 11, 2012 in Savannah, GA.

Mr. Swinford was born in Savannah, GA and raised in the Old Fort neighborhood off of Habersham Street, the son of the late Charlie and Alma Powers Swinford. He attended Marist School where he was a champion swimmer on the swim team. He met and married, Selena Elkins of Savannah, who preceded him in death. Together, they had two daughters, Frances Hanson and Margaret Shangle of Oregon. He is also survived by his grandchildren, John and Jennifer and his great-grandchildren, Kaden and Kaylee.

Mr. Swinford was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II in Germany where he served with the 385th Infantry, 76 Division. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for valor. Following his military tenure he worked for the United States Postal Service until his retirement.

He was a member of the Chatham Artillery, The American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, and the American Postal Workers Union. Outside of his civic involvement, he enjoyed having coffee and conversing with his friends at McDonalds every morning for many years. He also kept in touch with childhood friends over the years. One of which was Most Reverend Andrew Joseph McDonald, who is the Arch Bishop of Little Rock, Arkansas.

The family will be receiving friends on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

A graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Legion Post 184, P.O. Box 5564, Savannah, GA 31414.
